Workplace Safety: Preventing Fires from Spreading

A fire broke out on November 18, 2013 at Kaki Bukit. The fire at the industrial estate was put out in fifteen minutes. SCDF (Singapore Civil Defence Force) responded immediately. There were no injuries reported. Fires are big deal not only here in Singapore but around the world. As much as possible, the fire should be contained right away to lessen its damage and save the people.


Whether you are in your workplace or not, fires can happen. If in this case you are in your workplace, you need to know what to do so you will not be stuck inside and leave your fate to other people. It is important to contain an industrial fire especially if there are many employees around. If you own an industrial estate, do not rely on luck or leave your fate to other people, you should know how to protect your place. You need to inspect for the following things:

1. Recognize equipments that can set fire

In your estate, you should look around and recognize equipments that can set fire. For example, are there flammable chemicals stacked near the combustible materials? You should look into that.


2. Search for materials that can spread fire

After recognizing the equipments that can set fire, you should do your best to check for materials that can spread fire. For example, are there many cardboard boxes or plastic containers around?


3. Check the condition of your mechanisms

There should be a preventive mechanism when dealing with fire. Mechanisms like firewalls, fire doors and catch basins can help prevent the spread of fire. It is important that you check the condition of your mechanisms. If they are damaged, have it fix.
